Notokia, Maps of Utopia [ full texts and pictures available on sysmik.org (archive) - ]
Through the writing of a fictional tale taking place in Notokia, city of nowhere, the adopted posture aims to keep aloof from reality. In his book Utopia, Thomas More focuses on the urban environment of his imaginary world, thinking that in a given society, dwellings determine spatial organization and behavior of its citizens. Utopia is the perfect island, a timeless place which is the mirror of the social reality of England of XVIth century. Most of the utopian society are thought in an urban context. The city enhances the domination of men over nature. Its plan, mostly geometrical, sends back in a implicit way to the rational intention which governs the political and social organization of it. A new urban paradigm is proposed : its ambition is to be the best spatial frame adapted to the social, political and economic transformations which occurred or which are in process. One of the aim of the utopia is the reversal of the reading of the world. This reversal is expressed by the representation of a society through its cities and through its laws, tending to create a distance with the real and lived society. U2 tower competition Dublin 2003 [ aborted project ]
nike shoe "kyoto" as inspiration
In May 2002, the Dublin Docklands Development Authorities launch an international competition in order to design a landmark tower whose upper part should welcome the U2 recording studios. The Nike shoe "kyoto" has worked as basic inspiration during the preliminary formal studies. The strips of an programmatic ribbon coils up in a complex movement giving birth to a fantasy object.
