The Great Asian Streets Symposium (GASS) was established in 2001. The initiative to organize such event came form recognition that there is a need for an Asia-based node of excellence on networks of ideas and results of research projects that focus at Asian cities. Historically and today, research activity and literature on Asian cities and public spaces are conducted and published by European and American institutions. By initiating and organizing GASS, Department of Architecture of the National University of Singapore responded to a dire lack of truly Asian perspectives within that field.

Advances in Architectural Geometry (Vienna University of Technology and Austrian Academy of Sciences, Vienna, Austria, from 2008-09-13 00:00 to 2008-09-16 00:00) by admin
Geometry lies at the core of the architectural design process. It is omnipresent, from the initial form-finding stages to the final construction. Modern geometric computing provides a variety of tools for the efficient design, analysis, and manufacturing of complex shapes. On the one hand this opens up new horizons for architecture. On the other hand, the architectural context also poses new problems to geometry. Around these problems the research area of architectural geometry is emerging. It is situated at the border of applied geometry and architecture.

Analogous Spaces: Architecture and the space of information, intellect and action (Ghent University, Ghent, from 2008-05-15 00:00 to 2008-05-17 00:00) by admin
The International Conference on Analogous Spaces interrogates the analogy between spaces in which knowledge is preserved, organized, transferred or activated. Although these spaces may differ in material, virtual, or operational ways, there are resemblances if one examines their ‘structure,’ ‘form’ and ‘architecture’. How do these spaces co-exist and interrelate?

In the Twenty-First Century, advanced digital technologies play a significant role in almost every aspect of our life. Many believe we are living in parallel space between the physical and the so-called 'Digital World' where alternative visualization and simulation seamlessly bridge these worlds.
ISVS 4: Pace or Speed? (Faculty of Architecture, Center for Environmental Planning and Technology - CEPT University, Ahmedabad, India, from 2008-02-15 00:00 to 2008-02-19 00:00) by admin
The fourth international seminar on vernacular settlements (ISVS-04) is being hosted by School of Architecture, CEPT at Ahmedabad, India in the month of February 2008. The focus of the seminar is on vernacular settlements and architecture in transition. Even though the change is an inevitable phenomenon, it happening without a structured study results in abrupt built environments. In most Asian philosophies, change is considered inevitable and a well come ingredient that has been cautiously controlled by the society...
ASCAAD 2007: Embodying Virtual Architecture (The Library of Alexandria (Bibliotheca Alexandrina), Alexandria, Egypt, from 2007-11-26 00:00 to 2007-11-28 00:00) by admin

This workshop aims to encourage the design research community to exploit Semantic Web and Web 2.0 techniques, facilitate communication between researchers and practitioners, and identify key research and implementation issues. In this workshop, the focus will be on practical applications and techniques for improving design processes. Such emphasis is particularly important and timely since more design organisations are considering moving toward using the Semantic Web in their businesses processes.

CAADRIA 2007: Digitization and Globalization (School of Architecture Southeast University, Southeast University, Nanjing, PR China, from 2007-04-18 00:00 to 2007-04-22 00:00) by admin
Turning to 21st century, the globe has been rapidly becoming a small village as the transportation and communication tools become more efficient and more easily available to the public. So has this been happening in AEC industry (Architecture, Engineering and Construction). Digital technology has apparently changed the working process in the AEC industry, but not as efficiently as in manufacturing industry, such as automobile production. It might be mainly because of the diversified components and scattered sites with lower industry standards, especially against the background of customization and vernacular traditions of architecture. What roles can digital technology play in this development and how can we steer correctly this inevitable trend?
